“ Welcome on board to an extraordinarily challenging era of human history! ”
The current world is characterized as volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) and hopes for remedy lie at extraordinary leadership and well-managed organizations. Leadership is a life-long pursuit that needs cultivation in all four dimensions of a person: intention, integrity, intellect, and interest.
First, all things are difficult before they turn easy. Future leaders need to demonstrate strong adverse quotient (AQ) to conquer all kinds of adversity. This demands a strong sense, either personal or collective, of purpose (or INTENTION) for life. Second, the most important administrative principle of the world-class TSMC is INTEGRITY. Without the support of character, talent might misuse their intelligence and knowledge for very selfish purposes. Finally, a leader must be a reader (or learner) who develops wide-spectrum of life possibilities since learning materials are no longer confined in books. INTERESTs of reading and learning to a new apex distinguish winner form losers.
What is missed from the holistic 4I in the last paragraph is INTELLECT, the conventionally narrow-tokened university mission. Under the COVID-19 impact, global institutions of higher education are struggling for new models for sustaining and transforming. A serious question we ask is what shall be cultivated in university when knowledge or capability are counted as partial for career and life competitiveness?
International School of Technology and Management at Feng Chia University, a proactively innovative higher education model in Taiwan, paves channels to high quality US and Australian universities for breeding Taiwanese top talents as the future leaders.
